I had a pen turned from sheoak.  Looked a treat.
We also have a bedroom suite made from palm tree wood and the look is very similar.
Might be an option next time you're at a dump and someone's throwing one out.
Probably take some time to dry properly of course.

Mick,
I have seen some good results from Australian natives.
I know bugger all about wood, so I won't try to name them, but I've even seen some great results with less "native" plants  like camphor laurel, the seed pods from banksia trees
and even prickly pear!
check this out on RBO

Owen,

I usually use cedar or walnut, however, Iam in the process of putting a weave on a full wells made from apple wood. Apple is fairly soft, but it is also very light.

dosnt matter hard or soft just get your timber resin impregnated this also eliminats the contraction and expantion and has a great finish when buffed and noo need for a finish unless you want a high gloss finish which looks abit tacky on a qulity timber handle ryansrods

Just wondering what you guys prefer to use for grips?
Hardwood, or softwood?

Best choices for figure, durability, etc?

Ever have any problems with expansion/contraction splitting the finsih or anything?

cheers,
Owen
